What Can Cause Gum Pain?

What Causes Gum Pain?

Gum pain can be intensely painful and is caused by a wide variety of things. Canker sores, for example, are extremely common and can be caused by anything from stress to a compromised immune system. At Toothbar, we concentrate our efforts on restoring your oral health and bringing back your best smile.

Gum pain can also be caused by an infection in a tooth’s root, called a tooth abscess, or by infected cuts and other injuries. Perhaps the most painful and consistent source of tooth pain is gingivitis or gum disease.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Any number of different things can cause gum disease. Most commonly it is caused by poor brushing and flossing practices, but it can also be caused by tobacco use, diabetes, or even pregnancy.

Gum disease is damaging and potentially harmful regardless of the cause. In the early stages of gum disease, an afflicted person’s gums swell and bleed around the roots of the teeth.

This can make it difficult to chew without pain or discomfort. As it becomes more advanced, a person’s gums might start to withdraw from the teeth altogether.

This creates tiny pockets of air between the teeth where food and other detritus can get stuck, leading to infection. Over time, these pockets can become so large that they loosen the teeth altogether, causing them to fall out.

Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis, and according to a study by the American Dental Association, approximately 30 percent of Americans have it, with 8.5 percent of Americans having an advanced form of the disease.

The World Health Organization ranks periodontitis as the 11th most common disease on the planet. In other words, if you have gingivitis, you’re not alone. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe also suffer from gum disease.
