Signs you might need a night guard

Dealing with unexplained, persistent pain can be a frustrating experience for anyone. Mouth pain, especially, can interfere significantly in your day-to-day life.

In many cases, it’s discovered that nighttime jaw-clewing and grinding (formally known as bruxism) are the culprit behind various instances of jaw and mouth-related discomfort. With roughly ten percent of the population affected by this problem, those suffering from bruxism are certainly not alone.

Whatever dental service you may be looking for, the Toothbar is equipped to address any needs you have with its experts in Austin Invisalign dentistry, Austin preventative dentistry, and Austin cosmetic dentistry.

Signs of Bruxism

There are many different ways these nighttime jaw clenching and teeth grinding behaviors can affect dental health, but dentists have a few most commonly occurring signs they look for when identifying the problem. These signs include headaches, tooth chipping/wear, jaw pain, and fatigue.

  1. Headaches: Headaches among those with bruxism often occur when first waking up in the morning, and are the result of tensing muscles in the mouth and face. They typically feel like tension headaches.
  2. Tooth chipping: The tooth chipping and overall wear is the result of the recurrent pressure placed on the teeth from grinding. At night, you don’t realize the full strength of your clenching, and as a result, your teeth can weather up to 250 pounds of force. This can weaken tooth enamel and lead to otherwise unexplained chipping.
  3. Jaw pain: Jaw pain and jaw lock can also be the result from sleep bruxism. If you find yourself experiencing pain when chewing food, or jaw tightness when widely opening your mouth, it may be from unconscious force placed on your jaw at nighttime.
  4. Fatigue: Fatigue occurs from the general sleep disruption caused by bruxism.

Risk factors for sleep bruxism include the use of stimulants like caffeine or cigarettes before bed. Those who struggle with anxiety are also more at risk for these behaviors. It’s recommended that those suffering from bruxism take care to avoid these substances before bed and take steps to manage any extra stress.

Treatment

While there is no guaranteed fix, a night guard is often prescribed to treat bruxism. A night guard works by acting as a protective barrier to teeth and gums. It can help relieve tension and lessen damage from the force of your bite.

If you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms, ask your dentist if a night guard could helpful. While not everyone experiencing very mild bruxism symptoms may need a night guard, it is always worth discussing with your dentist.

Night guards can play a big part in preventing the long-term effects of bruxism such as tooth erosion and damage to dental crowns and fillings.

Whatever the dental ailment, it’s crucial to talk to your dentist to find the right treatment for you.
